Although a win for British hope Lewis Hamilton failed to materialise at Silverstone on Sunday, the McLaren driver’s growing popularity saw that the British track enjoyed a record-breaking turnout of fans over the race weekend.
On Friday over 42,000 passed through the gates to enjoy the first day of Formula One practice, while 80,000 spectators were present on Saturday to see Hamilton clinch pole position. For Sunday’s race 85,000 flocked to the track to see Hamilton finish in third, behind Ferrari’s winning driver Kimi Raikkonen and McLaren team mate Fernando Alonso.
The total figure for the Grand Prix weekend was thus 207,000 over the three days - much higher than the number of fans that attended the 2006 race.
